Some fear the dark. Darkness is filled with the unknown. The unknown can be frightening – it often involves change. Regardless what the change, it often frightens.
Others welcome the dark. Darkness never lasts. Eventually, light shines and darkness recedes – all is made known and there is nothing left to fear.

“What do you mean it’s ‘tasty’? Do you mean that it is sweet as in heavenly nectar? Perhaps wafting flowery aromas fused with honey?”
“Do you mean that it is savory as in a delectable and aromatic blend?”
“Well, can I taste it?”
“No. It is Tay’s tea.”

Evening plans were dashed with his sudden departure. Fearing for her safety, she simply left – not wasting time to gather any belongings. That night was spent going from place to place. Morning brought opportunity to ride along with others. Afternoon brought ringing ears and dimming sight forewarning of her collapse.

Darkness surrounded Brand as he came to. Fumbling a lighter from his jacket pocket, he took in his surroundings. He was in a cave with what appeared to have once been a nest. One ancient leathery egg remained. Something had lived here, taking the egg, Brand searched for the exit.

“No, but there’s an ‘open house’ right now. Want to check it out?”
“This place – I dream of this house all the time.”
“You used to live here?”
“No – only in dreams.”
“Rumors are that this place is haunted.”
“You’re the ghost!”

Anticipation has been building with the expectation of dreams come true. Hot on the trail of life-changing events, obstacles have been overcome. Now, the knowledge of what is within ignites curiosity. As the time approaches, breath is held and eyes a fix unblinking.

Hugh awoke in darkness. Had he heard something? He lay still, straining to listen. Were those footsteps? His heart beat faster. The tread of heavy footsteps came up the stairs. Hugh tried the light – empty clicks. His heart raced as he yanked open the door. Light flooded the stairway – empty.

This was no stick-in-your-back-pocket y-shaped wood. Sure, if you looked closely enough, you could see the trademark y-shape in the metal under the grip. However, this gadget had an arm-brace that you slipped through before grasping to aim. Real leather cupped the projectile which hurtled into its target. My sling!

Among the crowd, he stood out. Most obviously, he was much taller – the tops of all others’ heads came up to the middle of his chest. Thus, his head was constantly bent downwards at an awkward angle. Others chattered – he strained to listen. Even surrounded this way, he was alone.

Every Christmas, my mother would get me an ornament. That last time, I chose nearly a year in advance, knowing my mother would remember. After she passed, it wasn’t that I expected it to be there. Still, I looked. Only then did I know in my heart she was gone.
